Janie Kemp was our guild’s Spotlight Quilter for the KCRQF show

“I have always sewed. I started making doll clothes on my grandmother’s treadle machine. I graduated to making my own clothes in high school and college with a desire to go into fashion design. I ended with a degree in art education. After teaching a few years and with a little girl, I made baby quilts and clothes for my daughter. At the end of my career of owning a picture framing business for 29 years, I joined the Piece Corps Quilters Guild in St Joseph, MO.
My love has always been hand applique. After making many quilts for myself, friends and family, I do mostly charity quilts. Below Janie is showing a young girl how to appliqué.
I have entered quilts in the AQA Des Moines, IA show and AQS has published my applique design in 2015.
Janie also donated a quilt for our guild’s opportunity quilt chances. The quilt is named “Butterflies Are Free”. The quilt is 86 in. by 93 in. the background is her own original design using fabric “water color” technique for the main body of the quilt. The butterflies were made from the pattern “Butterfly Collection” by Joann Webb, Valley Springs Design and were machine appliqued onto the quilt. It turned out to be a beautiful quilt. Tickets are still available through October 2025.
